North Brunswick 40th Annual Military Ball, Great Success

Seniors 2012

Everyone was dressed to impress, the guys in their dress uniforms and the ladies in their lovely gowns.
It was a night to remember as the North Brunswick JROTC held it’s 40th annual Military Ball at Sea Trail Golf Resort on Feb 4, 2012.
Over 300 people attended the ball, including special guest speaker, Col John Melia, who was the Senior Army instructor at North Brunswick from 1998 to 2007, his wife, Anne, John Thompson, Shirley Baboon, Robert Grimes from the school board, North Brunswick High school principal, Sheila Grady  North Brunswick assistant principal, Larry Cunningham, Chris Rivenburgh, manager of Harris Teeter in Leland and his wife Brenda.  The evening began with the posting of the colors by the JROTC color guard and the invocation by C/CPT Shanita Webb.  Special toasts were made to the President of the United States, the US Army and the Scorpion Battalion.  JROTC freshman cadets cited the Cadet Creed.  After a slide-show the seniors were recognized for their accomplishments.     Battalion commander, Alejandra Aguilar received the NROTC scholarship and will be attending UNC-Chapel Hill.  Allen Baker will be attending the Virginia Military Institute, Christian Byrd will be going to East Carolina University and Pheonte Dobson will be attending the Citadel, just to name a few.  After retiring the colors for the evening, the seniors take the dance floor, and the night ended with everyone dancing.  The ball was a great success.

Interested stakeholders are invited to join district leaders Friday, January 27, 2012 for the annual federal programs meeting.  The purpose of the meeting is to provide up to date information about federally funded services offered in Brunswick County Schools and to solicit input for 2012-2013 federal program plans.
Don’t miss this great opportunity to learn more about your local school system! The meeting will be held from 9:00 a.m.-10:30 a.m. at the Brunswick County Board of Education.

ATMC AWARDS $25,000 IN EDUCATION GRANTS

Shallotte, NC — ATMC has awarded $25,000 in grant funds to 14 educators serving Brunswick County students and residents. The cooperative recently honored the recipients with a reception at ATMC’s corporate headquarters in Shallotte.  Representatives from each school talked about the programs for which the grant funds are earmarked and how these grants will positively impact area students.

 

Those receiving funding were:

 

Belville Elementary School (David Everett): The Outdoor Classroom – supplies to enable staff to go outdoors to teach science and other subjects

Bolivia Elementary School (Sally Lewis & Lucy Gansfield): Come Grow With Us – utilize an outdoor interactive garden project to enable first graders to experience the complete growing cycle of living things

Southport Elementary School (Christine Pratt):  eXcited about eReading – use eReaders to strengthen vocabulary and reading skills

Supply Elementary School (Hollie Pritchard): Snuggle Up With a Nook – use Nooks to foster an increased desire to read

Town Creek Elementary School (Rebecca Brown): iPad Learning Labs – create a digital environment for encouraging learning through use of technology and applications available on iPads

Union Elementary School (Dawn Long-Miller) Coming to a Book Near You – use video cameras and editing software to enable elementary students to write and produce their own book trailers

Cedar Grove Middle School (Mary Zeigler): Laptops for Science – provide laptops for various science classes, training, club activities and various science activities

Leland Middle School (Meggen Calderwood): Painless Vocabulary Book – purchase vocabulary books that will help 8th graders to improve their writing, reading and testing skills

Waccamaw School (Ben Chapman): Discovering Dimensions Through Drafting – use AutoCAD software to stimulate interest in math and demonstrate its importance in life

Waccamaw Elementary School (Barbara Evans): Using Nooks to Look at Books and Other Cyberspace Things – use tablets to teach special needs to read better with eReaders, access libraries, utilizes the Internet for information and improve overall computer skills

Brunswick County Academy (Kenneth White): Fitness is Key! – expand gym equipment so that students will be encouraged to participate in sports and exercise and improve coordination and team-building skills

South Brunswick High School (Charles Patton): SmartMusic Learning Studio – computer-based music software that utilizes metronomes, tuners and digital accompaniment, allowing students to record themselves and listen to their performances afterwards

West Brunswick High School (Veronica Edge): AVID/Destination College – program that narrows the achievement gap by preparing all students for college–readiness and success in a global society by introducing all grade levels to local colleges and universities

West Brunswick High School (Crystal Karwacki): Digital Photography / The Eye of the Future – utilize digital cameras and editing software in journalism classes to document student activities and enhance digital technology skills

 

Allen Russ, ATMC CEO/General Manager, lauded the recipients on their creative programs and willingness to think outside the box. He added, “The programs unveiled here exhibit a                                                                                                                wonderful balance of the old and the new – from simple things like growing a garden and learning in the great outdoors to technology that is changing the world and the way we live. You are planting these seeds in our students, and we hope that these grant funds help you to help them cultivate success. Thank you for going that extra mile and making a difference.”

 

ATMC began awarding community and education grants in 2006. To date, over 170 local community and education grants have been awarded totaling $270,000. ATMC will begin accepting applications for its Community Connections grants in early 2012.

Acme Delco Middle School FBLA visits Philadelphia

Acme Delco Middle School Future Business Leaders of America (FBLA) attended the 2011 FBLA-PBL Fall National Leadership Conference in Philadelphia, PA on November 4-5, 2011.  They were able to have fifteen students in attendance.

Upon arrival on students attended the Opening General Session and they were favored with a presentation by Mr. Jerry Ackerman and they closed with a Battle of the States session.  On Saturday, they attended several informative workshops entitled Make Some NOYS for Youth Safety, R U Safe Online, and Getting to Know You.

They continued the afternoon with a Closing General Session and they were favored with a presentation by Mr. Patrick Maurer who has a performance background with Comedy Sportz. They finished the evening with a Blue Jeans for Babies Dance.  Additionally, they were able to visit the Liberty Bell Center for a tour. Acme Delco Middle School  is led by Mrs. April Snowden

Bolivia Elementary School Wins $10,000 in Paper Mate Product Contest

After months of anticipation and with the final votes certified, Bolivia Elementary School is officially the grand prize winner of the national ”Pick Paper Mate and Share the Love” contest.
The school is awaiting receipt of a shipment of Paper Mate products worth $10,000.00!
Principal Kathy Owens and the entire Bolivia Elementary School family extend warm thanks to everyone who participated in the online voting which was hosted through Facebook.
