Leland Hot Stove
Banquet Set for January 14
Leland Hot Stove League will be holding their 8th annual banquet January 14, at North Brunswick High School. The event will be at 6:30 p.m. An autograph session will begin when the doors open at 5:30.
The non-profit organization uses the banquet as a way to make money to award scholarships to North Brunswick baseball players. Over the last six years they have given out $12,000.00 worth of scholarships.
This year’s keynote speaker will be Apex native Landon Powell of the Oakland A’s. Powell played collegiate ball at South Carolina where he made three trips to the College World Series and was recently named to the All-Time College World Series team. He was one of just two catchers so honored.
During the 2010 season he became just the 17th catcher in MLB history to catch a perfect game as Dallas Braden pitched the gem against the Tampa Bay Devil Rays. Powell recently signed a one year contract with the A’s to avoid arbitration.
Bill Harris a former Wilmington College star who played with the Cleveland Indians and Kansas City Royals will also speak. The other speaker will be Tom Austin the head baseball coach at Methodist University. Austin has 900 wins and ranks eighth in the history of NCAA D-III in wins. Former North Brunswick and East Carolina standout Billy Best returns as the emcee of the banquet
Tickets for the event are just $20.00. For ticket information please contact Carter Rabon at 371-3083 or Nelson Best at 371-3764. Tickets can be purchased at the door.
