After getting off to a slow start losing their first two games, the Brunswick Community College women’s basketball team seems to have turned the corner. Coach Ashlyn Burke’s squad has now won five of the last seven games to improve to 5-4 on the season. The Lady Dolphins had only four players return from last season’s team, so winning the Holiday Tournament has to be a big boost to the confidence of the team going into the New Year.
BCC defeated Baltimore City Community College 67-54, then defeated Hartford Community College 73-66 to win the tournament. In the opening game against Baltimore City the game remained relatively close throughout the first half as the lead kept changing hands. The Lady Dolphins went into the locker room with a slim 30-26 lead.
BCC came out the gate running the second half, and went on a 15-0 run. Julia Crews hit two long three point buckets and scored eight points to lead the charge. The Lady Dolphins held the visitors scoreless for over four minutes as they raced out to a 45-26 lead. That was a deficit Baltimore was never able to overcome.
Crews led BCC in scoring with 16 points. Syerra Troutman tallied 13 while former East Columbus standout Shanita Hampton added 10. Shaquitta Jones added eight points and Jennette Taylor scored seven.
Against Harford Community College the game was physical from the onset. The Lady Dolphins couldn’t handle the HCC full court pressure and found themselves trailing early due to turnovers. BCC was finally able to pull ahead of the visitors when Shanquoya May nailed a jumper giving BCC a 15-13 lead. The Lady Dolphins built the lead to eight points before ending the half with a 34-28 lead.
BCC was able to hold on to the lead throughout the rest of the game leading by nine several times, but HCC did cut into the lead and trailed by just three with eight minutes remaining. Julia Crews made a pair of free throws, and Shanita Hampton sank one as BCC extended the lead to 55-49. HCC wouldn’t go away quietly however, cutting the lead to 67-62 with just over a minute left. Hampton then hit a pair of free throws and Shaquoya May scored a bucket making ot a 69-62 score which pretty much sealed the win.
BCC placed five players in double figures.. Crews led the way with 15 points. Jones who fouled out with about six minutes remaining tallied 14. May and Emily Jackson added 12 while Hampton scored 11.
BCC returns to action with a conference match-up January 6 when they travel to Patrick Henry Community College in Martinsville, Virginia. They return home January 14 when they host Catawba Valley Community College.
