9-11 Memorial Bike Run Benefits BSL Police Department

Boiling Spring Lakes held its annual 9-11 Memorial Bike Run on Saturday, September 11. In all, 116 motorcyclists registered for the event, and then traversed Brunswick County along a scenic route laid out by the City of BSL’s Special Events Committee. Proceeds

from this year’s run will be donated to the Boiling Spring Lakes Police Department.

“I was just overwhelmed at the turnout,” said committee chair Mary Stillwell. “It was one of the better bike runs we have had – and there was such a great feeling of togetherness with everyone who participated.”

Boiling Spring Lakes Mayor Richard White chats with other bike run participants as he prepares to ride his own Harley-Davidson in the event.

The popular, annual fundraising event began and ended at the First Baptist Church, 45 E. Boiling Spring Road, BSL. The route took riders up NC 87 to U.S. 17 to west of Shallotte, looping back to U.S. 17, to NC 211 over to Southport, then back to BSL.

Arriving back in BSL after the run, riders were treated to a pig pickin’ barbeque lunch served at the First Baptist Church. Guest luncheon speaker was Superior Court Judge Ola M. Lewis.

BSL City Commission member Joan Kinney volunteers at the registration table.

Brunswick County Students Receive CIS Scholarships

Partnerships with local businesses and individuals make scholarships possible.

Southport, NC (May 14, 2010) – Communities In Schools of Brunswick County, Inc. (CIS) awarded $1,000 scholarships to three graduating seniors at South Brunswick High School during this year’s senior awards ceremony. Recipients were interviewed and scored based on academics, school activities, community involvement, financial need, and interview presentation.

CIS partners with local businesses, industries, civic clubs, agencies, communities of faith and individuals to provide these scholarships. “I believe that all students can and should go onto higher education if they choose, and CIS scholarships create a pathway to make that happen,” says CIS board member Joan Madsen.

Scholarships sponsored by Drs. Anna and Daniel Blizzard, and Joan and Walt Madsen were presented to Greer Jones, and Tykyra Joyner. The Richard W. Hauman Memorial Scholarship went to Richard Earl Ogden.
